Grants for an accessible bathroom in Kildare
The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability pays up to €40,000 towards work like an accessible shower or a downstairs toilet, and the Mobility Aids Grant up to €8,000 (Department of Housing). Kildare County Council paused new applications for both from 8 June 2026, apart from Priority 1 cases.

What your bathroom costs in Kildare
Two taps: the kind of job, and whether anything moves. The answer is the range published for Kildare.
Published Kildare range for this job
€9,000 to €20,400
Published figures for this job from firms and guides covering Kildare, read 3 November 2026. Aidan Kelly Construction: €9,000 to €15,000 (main bathroom with a bath or a shower); Aidan Kelly Construction: €20,400 (real job: bath out, walk-in shower in, plumbing moved). None of them says whether VAT is included.
- Moving the toilet, shower or basin adds €1,200 to €2,500 in plumbing alone (Tile Merchant).
- Tiling labour runs €60 to €90 a m², on top of the tiles (Tile Merchant).
- Electrics and ventilation add €400 to €800 on a standard job (Tile Merchant), by a Registered Electrical Contractor (CRU).
How this is worked out
The range runs from the lowest to the highest figure published for that kind of job by firms and price guides covering Kildare: Aidan Kelly Construction, QuoteHub.ie's and plumbersinireland.ie's Kildare pages, and Tile Merchant's Irish ranges. A single figure is a real job one firm priced. "+" means a source gives no top figure. Moving things adds Tile Merchant's €1,200 to €2,500 for the plumbing. None of them says whether VAT is in. The sum is ours. Prices read on 3 November 2026. It's an estimate, never a quote.
The pause
What Kildare's pause means
Housing Aid for Older People has reached its funding limit for 2026 and is closed apart from emergencies: failed heating, emergency structural or electrical repairs. Non-emergency applications go in from January 2027 (Kildare County Council).
It happened in 2025 too. Kfm reported on 17 September 2025 that the council had stopped taking new applications after about 1,000 came in that year, against 800 in 2024, with €4,900,000 from the Exchequer and €736,114 from the council.
The grants
Three grants, one form
| Grant | Most it pays | Income | Bathroom work |

| Mobility Aids Grant | €8,000 | Up to €37,500 a year | Level-access showers, grab rails, ramps, stair lifts |
| Housing Aid for Older People | €10,700 | Means tested, aged 66+ | Repairs, not a bathroom upgrade |

Kildare's 2026 money
What Kildare has to spend in 2026
Funding is set each year. When it's committed, Kildare pauses new applications, as it did in 2025 and again in June 2026.
How to apply
Applying, in order
- Get the 2026 application form and the "items needed" list from Kildare County Council's housing grants page.
- Include certified income for every household member, pensions too. Kildare returns incomplete applications.
- The council assesses the application and the priority.
- Get written prices for the approved work. The council keeps a contractors list as a reference, which it says is not an endorsement.
- Wait for approval. Work started before approval isn't grant-aided.
From Kildare County Council's page, which also has the form to claim back VAT on adaptation works.

Before anyone comes to price it
- Measure the room, wall to wall, and the window and door.
- Decide if the toilet and shower stay where they are. Moving them adds plumbing.
- Check where the hot water comes from: a cylinder, a combi boiler or an electric shower.
- Ask for a written price that lists the strip-out, tanking, tiling, fittings, electrics and VAT.
